Ahsan Aijaz is a Partner and Managing Director of Fortress Credit Funds and Co-CIO of Fortress Net Lease Income Fund at Fortress Investment Group. Mr. Aijaz joined Fortress in 2011 and has been involved in over $11 billion of primarily net lease transactions, as well as lending and private equity transactions across the US and Europe. Prior to Fortress, Mr. Aijaz worked in the structured real estate group at a private equity firm in Los Angeles. As a former investment banker for Butler, Wick & Co, Mr. Aijaz has provided strategic advisory services and structured multimillion dollar bond financings for companies such as ABB Inc., Baker Hugues Inc., Borders Group Inc., Eli Lily Inc., General Electric, Hy-Vee Inc., Niagara Mohawk Power Corp., Southwestern Bell Telephone Co., Tyco International, V.F. Corporation and Wal-Mart Stores Inc. Prior to joining Fortress, Mr. Aijaz ran the Structured Finance Group at a private equity firm in Los Angeles, and founded and oversaw the Corporate Finance Investment Banking practice for Butler, Wick & Co. Inc., now a division of Stifel Nicolaus & Co. He began his career at McDonald Investment Inc., a division of Key Bank, as an investment banker. Mr. Aijaz holds a B.S. in Finance from the Fisher College of Business at The Ohio State University. He is a member of the Corporate Treasurer's Council of the Association for Financial Professionals and ICSC, the global trade association of the shopping center industry. He has served on the Advisory Board of Real Medicine Foundation, a humanitarian relief organization founded in response to the December 2004 tsunami in Southeast Asia. He served two consecutive terms on the Board of LACO from 2014 to 2020, and serves on the board for the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts. Mr. Aijaz is an accomplished pilot and member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association.
Patricia Artigas is a retired partner at Capital Research Global Company, (a subsidiary of the Capital Group Companies) where she worked for twenty-two years as an investment professional, with a focus in Emerging Markets. Prior to that position, she was Head of Research for Bankers Trust Argentina. Originally from Buenos Aires, Argentina, Patricia emigrated to the US in 1995 to work for Capital Group. She has a BA in Economics from the Argentina Catholic University and an MBA from the Macroeconomics Study Center. On top of being a board member for LA Opera, Patricia also serves as a member of the Investment Committee of the Music Center, representing LA opera. Since 2018 she serves as an advisor to the Latin American division of Human Rights Watch. Patricia and her husband Lucas are Latin American art collectors and through their foundation they support different initiatives related to the arts, education and catholic missions.
Jim Asperger is a partner at Quinn Emanuel Urquhart Oliver & Hedges LLP in Los Angeles. He tries civil and white-collar criminal cases, conducts internal corporate investigations and represents publicly traded companies, audit committees, independent directors and corporate officers in federal grand jury, SEC and other government investigations. He also is a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, and served as chief of the Major Frauds Section of the Los Angeles U.S. Attorney’s Office, where he supervised the investigation and prosecution of complex financial fraud and RICO cases. Before entering private practice, he was a law clerk for United States Supreme Court Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist and California Supreme Court Justice Stanley Mosk. He has five children. He and his wife Christine live with their family in Pasadena and are long-time supporters and fans of LA Opera.
Haig S. Bagerdjian is chairman and CEO of Point 360, one of the largest providers of high definition and standard definition digital mastering, data conversion and video and film asset management services to owners, producers and distributors of entertainment and advertising content. He was the executive vice president for Syncor International Corporation and President and Chief Executive Officer for Syncor Overseas Ltd. In addition, he served in several other executive positions at Syncor from 1991 to 2001, among them Corporate Secretary, Chief Legal Officer, Senior Vice President of Business Development and CEO of Syncor Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Syncor was the leading provider of radio- pharmaceuticals, comprehensive nuclear pharmacy services and medical imaging services. From 1987 to 1991, he served in several executive level positions at Calmark Holding Corporation. He was also general counsel for American Adventure, Inc., which was a subsidiary of Calmark Holding. He received a B.A. in International Relations and Slavic Languages and Literature, and Certificates in Russian Studies, Strategic Defense and National Security from the University of Southern California in 1983, and a J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1986. He was admitted to the State Bar of California. He serves as a director of Innodata Corporation.
Frank E. Baxter is chairman emeritus of Jefferies and Company, Inc., a global investment bank. He retired as CEO in 2001, a position he held since 1987. He was ambassador to Uruguay from 2006 to 2009. His numerous civic activities include: co-chairman of the board of the Alliance for College-Ready Public Schools; chairman of the board of Fremont College; chairman of the board of University of California Berkeley Foundation; trustee of the I have a Dream Foundation, LA Chapter; life trustee of the Los Angeles Opera and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. He is a former director of the NASD and served as chairman of the committee which resulted in the spin-off of NASDAQ. He subsequently served on the board of NASDAQ as a member of the executive committee and chairman of the CEO search committee. He is a former director of the Securities Industry Association. He graduated from UC Berkeley with a degree in economics. He and his wife Kathrine have three children, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Paul Bloch is the president of DataDirect Networks, Inc, a privately held technology company he co-founded with Alex Bouzari in 1998. Prior to his involvement at DataDirect Networks, Mr. Bloch was the CEO of Megadrive Systems from 1988 to 1998 and president of Personal Writer Inc from 1986 to 1990. Mr. Bloch holds a telecommunications engineering degree from ENST in France and an MS in electrical engineering from the California Institute of Technology. Mr. Bloch was born in France and moved to the United States in 1983. He is married to Marie-France and has two children, David and Nadine. Mr. Bloch is involved in a number of artistic, civic and religious charities, and enjoys skiing, golfing, tennis and antique cars.
Lisa Bratkovich is Founding Partner, Fractional Chief Marketing Officer at CMO Syndicate, which gathers Chief Marketing Officers from top companies to help CEOs & C-level executives accelerate their business growth. Lisa is also the CEO of direct upside group, a boutique direct-to-consumer marketing and customer experience transformation consulting practice founded in 2016. They collaborate with companies and brands to help solve direct-to-consumer challenges and accelerate growth, with a focus on subscription business models. Clients include Proactiv and Jenny Craig. Prior to direct upside group, Lisa was Chief Marketing Officer at ChromaDex, a $59 million science-based nutraceutical company. She also spent 13 years at $1.6 billion direct-to-consumer industry leader Guthy-Renker. At Guthy-Renker, she served as SVP of Marketing, launching and managing highly successful multi-million dollar health and beauty brands and leading their enterprise-wide customer experience transformation and voice of the customer integration. Lisa has also held direct-to-consumer marketing leadership roles at Murad, SCI and United States Sales Corporation. Lisa is a Board Member and Co-Managing Director of Girls in Tech - Los Angeles, a founding member of Chief, and a previous Board Member and Board President of Organization of Women Executives. She is passionate about elevating women in the workplace. She holds a B.A. from the University of California – Los Angeles and is an avid art lover and traveler.
Iman Brivanlou, PhD, is a managing director and head of Income Equities for the TCW Group, a leading global asset management firm. He is the lead portfolio manager for a number of TCW high dividend equities and real estate funds. As an equity research analyst, Dr. Brivanlou’s coverage spanned the real estate, insurance, business services, transportation and consumer staples sectors. He was a Howard Hughes Post-Doctoral Fellow in molecular neurobiology at the Salk Institute in La Jolla. He holds a BS in physics from MIT, a PhD in neuroscience from Harvard and an MBA in finance and strategy from UCLA’s Anderson School of Management.
Brian P. Brooks is a lawyer, banker, entrepreneur, technologist, and former government official. He served as Acting Comptroller of the Currency from May 29, 2020 until January 14, 2021. Mr. Brooks grew up in Pueblo, Colorado, and holds a bachelor's degree from Harvard University in government and a J.D. degree from the University of Chicago Law School.
Mr. Brooks is a lawyer with a long work history in the financial sphere including roles such as managing partner of the Washington, D.C. office of the global law firm O’Melveny & Myers, vice chairman of OneWest Bank, executive vice president, general counsel, and corporate secretary of Fannie Mae, and chief legal officer of Coinbase, an $8 billion dollar Silicon Valley startup that is one of the largest digital currency platforms in the world. He currently serves as the CEO of BitFury Group, a blockchain technology company and one of the largest private infrastructure providers in the blockchain ecosystem. Mr. Brooks also serves on the boards of two special purpose acquisition companies: Valor Latitude Acquisition Corp., and EJF Acquisition Corp. He is also a board member of Spring Labs. Mr. Brooks previously served on the board of Avant, Inc., a Marketplace lending and technology platform company. Mr. Brooks has served on Boards of arts organizations such as the National Symphony Orchestra, the Los Angeles Master Chorale, and the Pasadena Conservatory of Music.
An accomplished musician, Mr. Brooks is a classical pianist and also plays keyboard in DC-area classic rock cover band The Johnny Esquire Band.
Barbara Burtin is an equity portfolio manager and research director at Capital Group. As an equity investment analyst, she covers European and Latin American banks and bank outsourcing providers, globally. She has 14 years of investment experience, all with Capital Group. Prior to joining Capital, Barbara worked in business development for Capital One Financial in the United States, France and Italy. She also brings a variety of other international business experiences, including entrepreneurship and management consulting. She holds an MBA with honors from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and a master’s degree in finance from HEC Paris. Barbara is based in Los Angeles.
Marlene Chávez, Ph.D, is a former president of the Opera League of Los Angeles. After teaching elementary school in Chicago, California and Korea, she earned a Ph.D in clinical psychology from the California Graduate Institute. She had a private practice in Encino for 20 years specializing in divorce mediation and family therapy and was a consultant in geriatrics at the Home for the Aging and to the Walker Center for paraplegics. Following that Marlene was employed at the Department of Family and Children Services as a psychotherapist and family finder investigator, connecting foster children with relatives. Marlene’s current employment is as an Interview Specialist for the City of Los Angeles Interviewing candidates for the Police Department, Fire Department and Civil Servants. She resides in Hancock Park and Bunker Hill Tower in Downtown LA.
Dr. Janet J. Ciriello is a licensed psychologist and author. She received her doctorate (EdD) from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. She attended Sarah Lawrence College, class of 1959. She was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to France, where she met Nicholas Ciriello, one of LA Opera's founding board members. Together, they established the Janet and Nicholas Ciriello Endowed Scholarship Fund to help a student with financial need gain access to a Sarah Lawrence education. Dr. Ciriello, who has a twin sister, is the co-author of Identity and Intimacy in Twins. She is an advisory board member of The Opera Buffs, Inc., which provides grants and performance opportunities to emerging vocal artists in Southern California. She also serves on the board of The Reiss Davis Graduate School. She previously served on the board of the Opera League of Los Angeles and was a director at Los Angeles Child Development Center, a nonprofit organization that provides accessible and affordable mental health services to children in need. Dr. Ciriello has been an LA Opera subscriber since the company's inaugural season.
Born in Vera Cruz, Mexico, Alicia Clark received degrees in industrial chemistry from the National University and in textile engineering from the National Polytechnic University. While working for Celanese Mexicana, she worked in the Technical Services Laboratory and became advertising and sales promotion manager, creating, planning and coordinating sales promotions and advertising programs. In 1970, she met Edward E. Clark, married, moved to New York, and was hired by United Merchants and Manufacturers as their Latin America fashion coordinator. She was invited by Arthur Ortenberg to become a 33% partner in a new manufacturing company which was named after his wife, Liz Claiborne. Ed and Alicia were the founders of Hispanics for LA Opera and chaired this organization for 20 years. She is a board member of the Pasadena Symphony Orchestra and the Los Angeles Music and Art School, and served on the council of REDCAT. She was president of the San Marino Woman’s Club and of the San Marino Guild of the Huntington Memorial Hospital; chair of the San Marino Celebrity Series; president of the MS Society, San Gabriel Valley Chapter; and co-chair of the Master Chorale’s annual gala dinner. For nine years, she chaired LA Opera’s Education and Community Services Committee. Ed and Alicia have been sponsors of Florencia en el Amazonas and La Bohème and contributed to the creation of Il Postino.
Bob splits his time between homes in Peru and Los Angeles. He and his wife, Ana, are major supporters of Symphony for Peru, which brings classical music to under privileged children throughout Peru (patterned after “El Sistema” in Venezuela). In the U.S., he is owner of a badminton club in Los Angeles with over 1,000 members and he is President of the USA Badminton Museum. He organizes major international badminton tournaments and captains U.S. teams to senior championships around the world. He is partner in Cook Investment Properties which develops commercial properties in the Silicon Valley. Born in Orange County, he graduated from Stanford University, did research at the John Hopkins Marine Institute, and completed graduate studies in biostatistics at UCLA.
Alice Steere Coulombe received her BA and MA from Stanford University. She has been a Music Center volunteer since 1970, the past chair of Music Center Presentations, and a past coordinator of volunteer activities at the Music Center, a position she held for three years. Alice is the founding president of the Opera League of Los Angeles and a founding member of the Los Angeles Opera board of directors, where she has served as chair of the education committee, chair of the board relations committee, and co-chair of the nominating committee. Alice has three children: Joe, Charlotte and Madeleine.
Alexis Deutsch-Adler and Robert Adler split their time between Indian Wells and Los Angeles. Alexis and her sister oversee the Three Sisters Foundation focusing on local needs related to inner city youth, mental health, housing insecurity, as well as international disaster response. Alexis was the founder of One Book, One City Malibu, and she is a member of the Los Angeles Library Council and supporter of The Library Foundation of Los Angeles. She is the current chairperson for the Southern California Committee of the National Museum of Women in the Arts and serves as a member of its advisory board. Alexis was a gallerist, as well as an art consultant producing site specific works for private and public spaces. She recently published a book of flash fiction paired with her own art, and she is currently writing a memoir collection about growing up in Los Angeles. Robert and Alexis are vintners and founders of the Adler Deutsch Vineyard in Napa. They enjoy tennis, golf, travel and their dog.
